2020 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!
About a year ago, I announced that I would start to write about Holmdel issues under “Better Holmdel”. Since that December 2018 email announcement, Better Holmdel has “snowballed” into a website and a Facebook page.
For the 2019 New Year, I posted some thoughts about 2018. In re-reading that post, it struck me that many of the comments are still relevant for the 2020 New Year! In case you missed it, see the link below:
In particular, I wrote that the Washington Post added a new slogan beneath its masthead that “Democracy Dies in Darkness”. In reviewing the past 12-month’s postings, it was abundantly clear that a light was needed to be shined on certain issues and events that have occurred in Holmdel in 2019.
In part, I believe this has helped two independent candidates get elected to the Holmdel Township Committee for the first time in about 30 years. Their campaign theme of transparency and integrity resonated with many Holmdel residents, especially against the backdrop of the 2019 headlines of nepotism, ethics law violations, attempt to divert public funds and unauthorized expenses.
This is what democracy is all about: citizens making informed decisions and taking actions.
It continues to be important that residents learn the about the facts and truths of what is happening in our town. And to get involved. Because it matters, sometimes a lot more than we realized! The 2019 local election for the second seat for the Holmdel Township Committee was decided by just two votes! In the neighboring Bayshore Borough of Highlands, the Mayor race was decided by just one vote.
We are grateful for the encouragement, support and the kind words that we have received during 2019, our inaugural year. Thank you.
