Wisconsin’s primary was scheduled on April 7, 2020, right in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic. The results of the Wisconsin primary were relatively moot since, after Super Tuesday and the withdrawal by Senator Bernie Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden became the presumptive Democratic nominee and the challenger to President Trump. Perhaps the only relevant result in Wisconsin was the judicial race between an incumbent Republican conservative judge and the more liberal Democratic challenger.

Out of concern for the health and safety of the voters, the Wisconsin Democrats, primarily through the Governor, tried to postpone the primary or switch to an all vote-by-mail election. These efforts were thwarted by the Republican controlled State Legislature. Unfortunately, as a result, voters were forced to choose between their personal health or their civic right and duty to vote. See picture above.

Fortunately for us, New Jersey allows voters to receive a ballot by mail. However, if you didn’t previously request to vote by mail, you will need to make a request. Please see the link below for the application form that you will need to fill out and return to the Monmouth County Clerk of Elections at 300 Halls Mill Road, Freehold, NJ 07728.

A local grassroots group Holmdel First will be providing links to resources and instructional videos on how to fill out the various forms including: (1) registering to vote, (2) application for vote by mail ballot, (3) change in party affiliation, and (4) the actual voting using the mail-in ballot. We will provide a link to these in the future (or contact us at betterholmdel@yahoo.com).

In case you missed it, Governor Murphy issued an executive order postponing New Jersey’s primary from June 2nd to July 7th.

Here are some key new dates that were changed as a result of pushing the primary to July 7th:

1. May 13th – deadline for a change in party affiliation. Remember, only registered voters that are affiliated with the party can vote in that party’s primary. In other words, only registered Republicans can vote in the Republican primary and only registered Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary.

2. May 30th – Commencement of mailing of Mail-in Ballots to voters

3. June 16th – deadline for voter registration for the primary election

4. June 30th – deadline to apply for a Mail-in Ballot by mail

5. July 7th – Primary Election day

Given the current situation with the coronavirus pandemic, we urge all voters to request to receive a mail-in ballot and to vote by mail. This is relatively easy to do. The key is to make sure you fill out the ballot properly and to mail it back sufficiently early so that it is received in

time to be counted.

Quick Coronavirus Update

Today is the first day of reopening of parks and other public areas including golf courses. Parking lots at various parks were full as people took advantage of the great weather.

It has been six weeks since Governor Murphy’s Executive Order for shelter in place in New Jersey.

The total deaths from the coronavirus in the United States is now 60,710, up from 426 just six weeks ago. Deaths in New Jersey is currently at 7,742, up from 16 six weeks ago. See the graphs below.

Total Coronavirus Deaths in New Jersey

We should note that while the population in New Jersey is less than 3% of the total population in the U.S., deaths in New Jersey from the coronavirus represent almost 13% of the total deaths in the United States.

Take away? There are encouraging signs but we are not out of the woods. Stay safe, stay healthy and stay patient.
